Re: The Ortus Research Module incident

Yesterday, during research module, some teachers were invited to go up to talk about certain categories applicable for projects day. Among them was our form teacher, Mdm Ng. Upon being invited to speak on the platform, everyone clapped loudly and some rowdier ones even whistled. However, one, or rather two people screamed.

The first was a student from 1o2, and the other was someone from our class (or so the teacher heard). the 1o2 student confessed his wrong immediately when asked, and was asked to stand at the side of the LT. However, when the teacher asked the person from 1o1 to admit his mistake, no one stood......

After class, 1o1 was the last to go back, as the teacher wanted the person who screamed to confess to his wrongdoing. However, that coward who screamed wouldnt budge. Therefore, all thanks to that one person's cowardliness, we had to stay back for 30 minutes, and clean up the LT2 for the next few weeks. So much for class spirit and togetherness!

Here are some reflections that i pondered over after this particular incident:

1) Students of HCI are supposed to be morally upright. In J-TIGER-R, 'I' stands for 'integrity'     and R stands for 'Responsibility' This student has failed to fulfill both of these values, as he was not honest with this matter; he did not confess to his audacious actions. Also, he did not take full responsibility for the matter and this caused the entire class to be affected by his actions. This is very irresponsible of that person.

2) As i thought back to a literature text which we had done recently: The Taximan's Story, from Little Ironies, by Catherine Lim, I recall that the class discussed on the degrading moral values of teenagers nowadays. I also published a post on that story and one of the questions discussed were: "Are teenager's moral values degrading nowadays?" After this incident, i was affirmed that it DOES apply to teens nowadays. As mentioned above, the cowardly student lacked moral values such as integrity and responsibility. Therefore, i am now assured, with a life example, that it IS happening right now: The degrading moral values of teenagers nowadays.

So, in response to that particular incident, i invite all who read this post to share their insights and indifferent opinions on this matter. Please tell me what your point of view is by leaving a comment.Thank You.

P.S. To the student who screamed during Ortus research module: if you are reading this, i would advise you to confess to your mistake. As Mdm Ng said, He who does not admit to his mistake is a coward. Turn yourself in the next lesson and spare us the agony of being part-time, cheap labour student cleaners!
